15/10/2016. EL.I.S.M.E. continues the SEMINAR "It's (Geo)economics, my dear!"

On October 15, Ms. Ismini Patta presented the subject “Why Globalization? Evolution, Strengthening, Deepening”. Ms. Patta attempted a journey into the deep waters of the globalization phenomenon, based on the following indicative questions:

•What defines globalization?
•What is its evolution and defining characteristics?
•Is it strengthened, and if so, how, by the role of informal and formal governance (G7,G20)?
•Do regional economic agreements/integrations deepen globalization or not?
•Does globalization have limits?
Thus, the presentation constituted a concise panorama of the phenomenon of economic globalization from the perspective of International Political Economy, using History as a method of approach.

Afterwards, Mr. Dimitris Stergiou presented the subject of the Digital Economy and the 4th Industrial Revolution. The term 4th Industrial Revolution was used by the founder and executive director of the World Economic Forum Klaus Swab during the 2016 meeting and specifies that it does not only concern “smart” and connected devices and systems.

According to Swab, the changes are taking place in a wide range of applications ranging from gene coding to nanotechnology and from renewable energy sources to quantum computers.

It is the mix of these technologies and their interaction across the physical, digital and biological spectrum that makes the 4th Industrial Revolution fundamentally different from previous technological revolutions and is changing not only our environment but also ourselves. It concerns 21 deep shifts such as implanted technologies, digital presence, internet in clothing, the internet of things, the interconnected home, driverless cars, etc.
