29/06/2016. BREXIT: Causes, Issues and Lessons

The result of the Referendum in the United Kingdom raises crucial questions, renews unresolved issues and worsens the liquidity of the international security and economic system.
Questions:
Does the marginal majority have the right to definitively bind the life and future of the minority?
How mature and informed were the voters on both sides? Were they aware of the consequences of their vote and were they ready to accept them?
How much of the United Kingdom and how much of the European Union will remain tomorrow?
Are there any Leaders left in Europe, are they Europeans and do they lead or are they being led?
Unresolved issues:
*Twenty million citizens of the European Union remain unemployed and about the same number of Asian and African immigrants/refugees live in ghettos. Many European States refuse to accept new refugees.
The 28 states of the European Union have ceded part of their national sovereignty to Brussels, which is, however, exercised in practice by a labyrinthine bureaucracy. The elected members of the European Parliament issue Resolutions without effect but reap huge rewards.
Political decisions are made and proposed by the European Commission, which, however, is not elected by the citizens. Political decisions are ultimately made by the Summit Council and the Councils of Ministers, which, however, are successively influenced by the European Commission, Germany, the national interest of each member and the party balances in their country.
The European Union's military security depends entirely on the United States, which defines NATO, and its energy sufficiency mainly on Russia, with which it is, however, at odds.
International security system:
The European Union has never acquired a security strategy, nor an autonomous military force, nor control of its borders. Its most powerful States have their national military forces on a case-by-case basis, dictated by Washington's cosmopolitan plan, which has failed everywhere, causing seismic changes in the world: Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Ukraine and earlier the Balkans.
Washington's pursuit of isolating, encircling and destroying Russia harms the interests and security of the European Union, but, despite this, the EU is forced to participate.
The United Kingdom has always been the warmest ally of the United States and represents American strategy in the European Union.
International economic system:
The European Union has advanced in its monetary and economic union but has not been able, or has not dared, in its political union. Thus it has put the horse behind the cart: the economy dictates political decisions because it has no political institutions to exercise economic policy.
The European Union declared its Euro an international currency, even though not all of its member states accept it. Thus, it joined globalization, accepted millions of Muslim immigrants to reduce its costs, and implemented multiculturalism to make them its citizens. As a result: it adulterated its culture, sacrificed the common European identity of its peoples, achieved the division of its personality, and brought terrorists to its historic capitals.
Bitterness with History:
These facts do not allow for much surprise about Brexit. The citizens of the United Kingdom have always had a feeling of superiority towards Europe, they feel different, they opposed the first steps of the EEC and created the Free Trade Area, they lost and were forced to join the EU but they kept their sterling which they respect very much. They believe that Europe owes them everything and that History has wronged them.
Indeed. In World War II they were the only ones who did not submit, they fought hard everywhere and, together with their fellow-speaking American former colonists, liberated Europe. They won the War but were defeated state by state in the Peace. Their once powerful Empire gradually lost all its possessions, its colonies and its protectorates: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Singapore, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya, Rhodesia, Cyprus.
With their Referendum, however, they did not solve any of their problems. On the contrary, they caused a new global problem and, instead of getting their blood back, they are in immediate danger of losing Scotland and Northern Ireland. That is why those who have a future and those who have an education voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU: young people up to 25 years old and the University Campuses, Cambridge and Oxford, where they know that no one can play with History and Democracy.
The Republic:
The Referendum is considered direct Democracy. The philosopher Aristotle, who with his works shaped our common European culture, teaches and summarizes Democracy in the following:
When rulers lack ethics, regimes become tyranny. Democracy is also tyranny when mob rule and demagogy prevail. The ethics of politicians and citizens therefore take precedence. Ethics is the addiction to virtue and especially to the exercise of virtue that aims to serve the common interest. Education teaches virtue and its exercise. That is why Education is everything. In a Democracy, citizens practice the virtue that politicians are required to practice and at the same time teach by their example to every citizen. Socrates was the first to say to his student Alcibiades: "In order for cities to prosper, they do not need walls, nor ships, nor multitude, nor size, but virtue. And you, if you are going to govern the city properly, have a duty to transmit ethics to the citizens. Before you govern, you must acquire virtue."
Democracy exists when all citizens are free and equal.
Freedom is realized when all citizens and politicians are equal before the Law, have equal rights to participate in the affairs of the State and equal duties to obey the decisions of the majority.
The citizen must learn to govern himself in order to govern well as a politician.
The People are sovereign when their majority exercises power, but Democracy is governed by the Law.
The Law, however, must be equal to all, be fair, and be applied to all.
It is not allowed to serve exclusively the interests of the majority, neither of the powerful nor of the poor who form the majority.
Citizens are free and equal, but not all are alike. They are distinguished by merit, and the worthy "share in the honors," that is, are elected to office. The common duty of all is to guard the Republic, just as the crew guards the ship served by many dissimilar people with discipline and cooperation. Otherwise, the ship of the Republic is lost. In order for it to move forward and benefit everyone, citizens and politicians must exercise sound judgment. And sound judgment means that equality and freedom have limits. Those who violate them harm the common interest, and then we have a vicious Democracy. According to Socrates, only the wise, the knowledgeable experts, have a sound opinion.
Where Laws do not prevail, demagogues prevail and then the People become scoundrels, more despotic than a Monarch, so Democracy becomes tyranny, even though there is a popular majority - but an exhausted one.
