The dominant position of the vast Ukraine, between Russia and NATO member states (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania), adds to it a special geostrategic importance. It is mainly this geostrategic importance of Ukraine that creates concerns in Moscow, as it understands that a future pro-European course on the part of Kiev would create tremors in Russia itself. Therefore, it is logical that the Russian leadership, on the one hand, has not fully reconciled with Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and on the other hand, seeks to maintain it in its sphere of influence, at least politically and economically.
