The clashes in December 1944 in Athens between the armed KKE-EAM, which sought the violent seizure of political power and the first post-occupation government of George Papandreou, and the British (the bloody "December Massacres" that left behind 7.000 dead and an unspecified number of civilians), formally ended on January 11, 1945 with the conclusion of an Armistice between the British, who were urgently in a hurry to close the Greek case in view of the Yalta Conference, and the defeated EAM, which was forced to evacuate its forces from Attica and the Thessaloniki region.
