With centuries of Turkish dominance in the Balkans, the region of southeastern Europe was marked by chronic underdevelopment. After the second failed siege of Vienna, the gradual retreat of the Turks began, which led to the conditions created by the Second Balkan War, limiting the former conquerors to the territories that constitute today's Turkey.
