Immediately after the June 7, 2015 elections in Turkey, informal exploratory contacts between the parties began regarding the possibility of forming a coalition government, while the new members of parliament were sworn in on June 23. Then, on June 30, the process of electing the president of the Turkish Grand National Assembly began, which was completed on July 01 after four votes. The party candidates were İsmet Yılmaz of the ruling AKP party, who was ultimately elected president with 259 votes in the fourth round, Deniz Baykal of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu of the nationalist MHP party, and Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat of the Kurdish HDP.
