Space and the Army: The new power multiplier for Greece

Space has emerged as a critical domain of strategic power. Satellites are not just technological tools; they are the “backbone” of defense and deterrence. From navigation and communications to surveillance and early warning, military operations are increasingly dependent on space.

For Greece, with the geographical spread of the Aegean and the challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, space power is not a luxury but a necessity. Through satellite communications networks (SatCom), surveillance programs (Copernicus, Galileo) and participation in the new European IRIS² system, the country can enhance deterrence and operational resilience.

International experience shows that major powers are now integrating space strategy on the same level as land, sea and air. NATO has already recognized space as an operational domain, while the EU has adopted the “Space Strategy for Security and Defence” with the aim of autonomous access and protection of critical infrastructure.

Greece must invest in:

  1. Secure satellite communications for military and civil needs.
  2. Merging data from satellites, UAVs and sensors for a single picture in the field.
  3. Space Situational Awareness to protect against threats such as space debris or hostile interference.
  4. Participation in industry so that Greek companies have a share in European projects.

Harnessing space can turn a geographical challenge into an advantage. With proper planning, Greece can gain “eyes and ears” that will enhance its security, deterrence, and regional influence.
